Good news : Driving licence without visiting the RTO for test? Check new rules
The Central government has empowered accredited driver training centres to issue DL to eligible candidates after successful completion of training. These training centres will have to be either run by the state transport authority or the Central government.
New Delhi: Two-wheeler or four-wheeler drivers now won’t need to visit the Regional Transportation Office (RTO) to get their driving licence made. In a major relief to the common man, the Centre has rolled out new rules for getting a driving license where a driving test is no longer compulsory.
The Union Ministry of Roads and Motorways has modified the rules for obtaining a driver’s license and the new rules kicked in from July 1, 2022. Relieving people of the obligation to visit the RTO and wait in long queues to get their DL made, the government has empowered accredited driver training centres to issue DL to eligible candidates after successful completion of training.
This means a DL can now be obtained without a driving test!
Driver training centres, which would be issuing the document, will have to be either run by the state transport authority or the Central government. These centres will have a 5-year validity which has to be renewed after that.
How will this work?
People applying for their DL will have to get themselves enrolled at any of these driver training centres and pass an exam conducted by them.
Once the test is cleared, the centre will issue a certificate.
After receiving the certificate, applicants can apply for a driving licence, which will be issued based on the training certificate without any test at the RTO.
It must be noted that the dedicated training centres will be equipped with simulators and will have driving test tracks. These centres can train for light motor vehicles (LMVs) and medium and heavy vehicles (HMVs).
The total training duration for LMVs will be 29 hours, to be completed within four weeks. The training centres will provide both theoretical and practical knowledge.
