Mehbooba Mufti claims students forced to sing bhajans in J&K school, gets fact checked
India Today has accessed the official govt order, according to which, the schools on September 13 were asked to recite an “all faith prayer — Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram.. Ishwar Allah tero naam.”
A day after former CM and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti claimed that the BJP was pushing its Hindutva agenda in Jammu and Kashmir by forcing Muslim children to sing Bhajans in schools, India Today accessed the official govt order, according to which, the schools on September 13 were asked to recite an “all faith prayer — Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram.. Ishwar Allah tero naam.”
Mufti’s comments drew sharp criticism from the BJP as the party accused her of spreading ‘fake news’ and rumours.
India Today did a fact-check on the government order and as per the documents, the recitation of ‘Raghupati Raghav…’ was part of a series of activities that are taking place to mark the 153rd birth anniversary of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi. Since ‘Raghupati Raghav…’ was one of the favourite bhajans of Gandhiji, that’s why it was part of the celebrations.
On Monday, sharing a video of students singing ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’ in a Kulgam school on her Twitter handle, Mufti said, “Jailing religious scholars, shutting down Jama Masjid & directing school kids here to sing Hindu hymns exposes the real hindutva agenda of GOI in Kashmir. Refusing these rabid dictates invites PSA & UAPA. It is the cost that we are paying for this so called “Badalta J&K”.”
Also, bringing the communal angle to it, Mufti said, “Muslim children are being forced to sing bhajans in school. The BJP wants to test their Hindutva agenda in J&K.”
The 105-second long video first shows the board of the government high school in South Kashmir’s Kulgam, before showing about two dozen students in school uniform singing the song with folded hands in the presence of a group of teachers.
Questioning why the BJP replaced ‘Lab pe aati hai dua’ with a ‘bhajan’, the PDP chief said, “Why did they stop ‘Lab pe aati hai’? it was not a religious song but now they have replaced it with a bhajan, what do they want to do?”
Mufti further said, “People of J&K had sidelined Pakistan and chose India despite being a Muslim majority state because we thought it will protect our right to religion. Unfortunately, they have stolen our identity and now they are on our religion. Since 2019, they have closed our Jama Masjid. Our religious leaders are being thrown into jails for some old videos of their comment.”
