Abrar Rashid, the 22-year-old son of jailed leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid, revealed that only Rs 27,000 was needed to run a successful campaign that resulted in the defeat of National Conference leader and former chief minister Omar Abdullah from the Baramulla seat. This modest expenditure underscores a grassroots effort that resonated with the electorate.
“The mandate is the victory of the people,” stated Abrar. Omar Abdullah conceded defeat even as the vote counting continued, acknowledging the democratic process and the voice of the voters. “I think it’s time to accept the inevitable. Congratulations to Engineer Rashid for his victory in North Kashmir,” Abdullah posted on X. He expressed doubts about the immediate release of Engineer Rashid from prison or the representation the people of North Kashmir would receive, but he affirmed that democracy had spoken.
Engineer Rashid, who has been in Tihar jail for the last five years on terror funding charges, received a significant mandate, which his son Abrar claims is evidence of his innocence. Abrar argues that his father should be released immediately to serve his constituents.
Abrar detailed the initial challenges of the campaign, noting that support was scant when his father first announced his candidacy for the Baramulla seat. However, over time, the campaign gained momentum, and thousands of volunteers rallied behind Engineer Rashid, creating a substantial wave of support.
The Rs 27,000 expenditure primarily covered fuel costs for Abrar’s vehicle. The campaign relied heavily on the dedication of volunteers who tirelessly contributed their efforts, leading to the overwhelming victory.
Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti also conceded defeat from the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat. She expressed her gratitude towards her party workers and supporters for their hard work despite the challenging circumstances.
“Respecting the verdict of the people, I thank my PDP workers and leaders for their hard work and support despite all the odds. My deepest gratitude to the people who voted for me. Winning and losing is part of the game and won’t deter us from our path,” Mufti posted on X at 1.58 pm.
These election results highlight a significant shift in the political landscape, with grassroots campaigns and volunteer efforts playing a pivotal role in challenging established political figures.
